Originally from Yuma, Arizona, Michael received his Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in exercise physiology from Chapman University in Orange, California, where he also played varsity football. Prior to attending dental school, Michael worked as a personal fitness trainer and high school football coach, helping many people attain healthier lifestyles. Michael went on to receive his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, where he developed a special interest for prosthodontics and implant dentistry, spending extra time working with various faculty members on advanced cases. To this day, Michael continues to attend classes around the country in order to strengthen his background in prosthodontics and implantology. Michael is also committed to service, and has been involved in various outreach programs dating back prior to dental school. He traveled to areas such as the Dominican Republic and Zimbabwe, Africa, to volunteer on medical mission trips. In the years leading up to dental school, Michael also volunteered weekly at a free dental clinic in Orange County, assisting oral surgeons and general dentists treat hundreds of patients. And throughout dental school, Michael had the opportunity help run student-led clinics, providing dental care to underprivileged residents of Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
Dr. Burkholder was born in Augsburg, Germany at the US Army base in 1952, and thereafter lived in Oklahoma, California, and Washington. In 1974 he received his BA degree in Biology with a Minor in Chemistry at Central Washington State College in Ellensburg, Washington. Dr. Burkholder took one year off, volunteering at Joe Whiting Memorial Dental Clinic in West Seattle for low-income families. He worked primarily with children and found the needs of our low-income families extensive. It was a rewarding prelude to his career in dentistry. Rich attended the University of Washington School of Dentistry, graduating within the top percent of his class in 1979. Following graduation from dental school, Dr. Burkholder traveled to Western Europe, finding a job in the Northern Swiss town of Schaffhausen. Dr. Burkholder’s goal was to eradicate dental decay within his areas of responsibility through comprehensive care and a strong preventive program. Dr. Burkholder returned to Washington State and practiced for 18 years in downtown Seattle, and then transitioned to Klahanie Family Dentistry in Issaquah, Washington. In 1989, Dr. Burkholder developed the “Adopt-a-Patient” Program for abused and neglected children, working primarily with the children from Childhaven. In 2008, Dr. Burkholder organized a team of dental health providers to perform dental care for approximately 80 children from the country of Belarus, which suffered the violent Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe. In his current practice, he remains passionate about providing dental care to underserved populations and children.
Anita manages the practice. As a retired medical doctor with years of experience in patient relations, business and healthcare as a whole, transferring her skills to dentistry has been smooth. Anita was a pioneer for female surgeons and was the seventh female urologist certified in Washington State. She also opened the first female urology practice in the Pacific Northwest. Amidst her career, Anita has remained a devoted wife, mother, and daughter. Although she has retired from surgery, it made sense to utilize her knowledge and years of experience in a less stressful yet parallel environment. Having a background in insurance and electronic health records has helped streamline the office into a state of the art facility.
